Insurance for entrepreneurs

Insurance for entrepreneurs in the Netherlands

Essential insurance for entrepreneurs in the Netherlands

Running a business in the Netherlands comes not only with significant responsibility, but also with the need to protect yourself against unforeseen situations. Whether you are a sole trader (ZZP'er), run a small company or a partnership, the right insurance can shield you from serious financial consequences.

Entrepreneur's liability and the role of insurance

In the Netherlands, the only mandatory insurance is basic health insurance (basiszorgverzekering). Every person living or working in the country must have it. As a self-employed entrepreneur, you bear full responsibility for your business -- legally, financially and operationally.

In addition to mandatory health insurance, it is worth considering additional policies that will protect you and your business.

Key insurance policies for entrepreneurs in the Netherlands

1. Business liability insurance -- AVB (Aansprakelijkheidsverzekering voor Bedrijven)

Protects you financially if you cause personal injury or property damage while providing services. Example: during an installation at a client's premises, you damage expensive equipment, and the client demands compensation.

2. Disability insurance -- AOV (Arbeidsongeschiktheidsverzekering)

Provides a monthly benefit if you are unable to work due to health reasons. As a ZZP'er, you have no access to sick pay or any state benefit.

3. Professional indemnity insurance

Particularly important for professionals providing advisory services (accountants, architects, lawyers, developers). It protects against the consequences of professional errors that cause financial losses for clients.

4. Business contents insurance

Protection of business property against theft, destruction, flooding and fire. It covers office, workshop or warehouse equipment -- furniture, electronics, tools, machinery and stock.

5. Legal expenses insurance

Covers the costs of a lawyer, court proceedings and advisory services in professional matters. It provides access to legal assistance in disputes with clients, subcontractors, suppliers or authorities.

6. Company vehicle insurance

Mandatory insurance for every vehicle used for business purposes. Every company car must have at least third-party liability insurance -- WA-verzekering (Wettelijke Aansprakelijkheid) -- which can be extended to include comprehensive cover, theft and vandalism.

7. Cyber insurance (Cyberverzekering)

Protection for the business against the consequences of cyberattacks, data breaches and digital losses. Particularly important if you store client data, issue invoices online or run an e-commerce shop.

8. Life insurance

Guarantees payment of a specified amount in the event of your death -- it goes to your loved ones or can be used to repay business obligations, loans or leases. Particularly important if you have a family.

Summary

Running a business comes with significant responsibility. Although most insurance policies for entrepreneurs are not mandatory, their absence can expose the business to serious financial risk. Properly chosen insurance is not a cost but an investment in the stability, security and peace of mind of running a business.
